FREEMAN FOUNDATION OFFERS “ONEWORLD NOW” $100,000 CHALLENGE
GRANT
(Seattle, WA) The Freeman Foundation has offered OneWorld Now!, the
innovative after school global leadership program for economically
disadva! ntaged youth, a $100,000 challenge grant. OneWorld Now! provides
a unique and comprehensive global leadership program of world languages,
leadership training, internships and study abroad experience to high
school youth. The program is currently offered at four Seattle public
high schools.
OneWorld Now! was recently featured in the Seattle Times and Seattle
Post-Intelligencer for the launch of its Arabic language program at
Seattle public high schools this fall. OneWorld Now! offers after
school Chinese or Arabic language classes, as well as leadership,
internships and study abroad opportunities to the seventy students
currently en! rolled in the program.
The program’s Chinese language pilot launched at Ingraham last
year was successful largely due to community support and a grant from
the Henry M. Jackson Foundation. The Freeman Foundation’s challenge
grant comes at an opportune time for the young organization, which
has been operating on a shoe string budget. Founder Kristin Hayden
says “This is exactly the kind of support we critically need
right now and I trust the community will help us take advantage of
this generous challenge!”
Besides OneWorld Now!’s impressive Board roaster of community
leaders, the program has also leveraged partnerships with local organizations
like Associates in Cultural Exchange, MAVIN Foundation, the University
of Washington as well as IIPP, a special program of the United Negro
College Fund. OneWorld Now! is a nonprofit global leadership program
dedicated to providing language, leadership, study abroad and community
service to economically disadvantaged youth. OneWorld Now! is a project
of the Tides Center.
