The 2009 OWN! Arabic and Chinese Summer Language Camp will take place August 3rd21st, from 9:00am to 3:00pm (weekdays only), at Seattle University. The program is open to incoming 9th12th grade students in the Seattle area, with a focus on serving minority and low-income applicants. High school students from outside the Seattle area are welcome to apply and attend, if they are able to arrange their own housing, transportation, and meals outside of the camp. The summer camp is FREE for accepted students, thanks to STARTALK scholarships.
Students are expected to attend the entire three weeks, and the intention is that most students completing the summer language camp will continue their language studies during the school year through OWN!'s academic-year after school program in Seattle Public Schools. The summer camp is open to current OneWorld Now! students, as well as new students.
The OWN! Summer Language Camp will include two levels of Arabic and Chinese instruction. The camp will focus on fostering language acquisition, intercultural understanding, and a desire for international travel. During the camp, Level 1 students will learn basic writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills. Level 2 students will build on and apply their language skills and cultural knowledge in realistic simulations. The camp will also introduce students to the products, practices, and perspectives of the Arab-speaking world and Chinese culture.
Classes and activities during the OWN! summer program will emphasize student-centered learning. Language will be reinforced through skits, role playing activities, cultural games, music, lessons from guest speakers, and technology. The last day of the camp will feature student performances in a culminating showcase for classmates, family, and community members.
